No, scientists didn't grow a complete human brain. But they did something that would have sounded like science fiction not long ago. Researchers from Harvard and the Broad Institute have kept lab-grown **human brain organoids** alive for more than five years. These tiny clusters of human brain cells contain more than a million cerebral cortex cells. And remarkably, they didn't simply survive. They kept developing. They continued to mature. And they appeared to keep track of time. The researchers found that the organoids followed molecular and epigenetic developmental patterns resembling those seen in the human brain. In other words, even inside a laboratory dish, these cells seemed to carry an internal developmental clock. ([Nature][1]) That could open an entirely new window into human biology. For the first time, scientists may be able to observe aspects of human brain development over years rather than weeks or months.
